    • [abstract] A tripartite study of the life and work of Hans Richter. The first part traces succinctly his varied career, outlining his contribution to the Dada movement and emphasizing the importance of his cinematographic work. In the interview which follows, Richter himself explains the mixture of idealism and anarchism which constituted Dada and how personally he aimed to combine plan and pure chance, full consciousness and aleatory inspiration, in his work. He considers dada as the father of modern art and discusses its link with the work of contemporary artists. Finally he comments on the relationship between art and the commercial market. In the third section, Gauthier surveys his major achievements, particularly in the fields of painting an film, emphasizing his innovatory genius and constant adherence to dadaist principles.
